Charles Phillips Trombone:
Charlie is a l967 graduate of
Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, Maryland, majoring in Music Education and Trombone.
He later attended Towson State University for a master's in Education.
Teachers he studied with that profoundly influenced his musical development
and playing include John Melick of the Baltimore Symphony, Las Vegas
trombonist Ken Hanlon, Armand Sarro of the National Symphony Orchestra,
Richard Higgins and Michael Prevas of the Peabody Conservatory, and Ray Hardy
of Baltimore County Schools.
Charlie
taught elementary school band and orchestra for over thirty years, primarily
for schools in the Perry Hall area of Baltimore County. Upon retirement from
teaching, he began a career in musical instrument repair, which he now
pursues at Stu's Music Shop in Westminster, Maryland.
In
addition to currently holding the position of Principal Trombonist with the
Hopkins Symphony Orchestra, Charlie has been a performer during most of his
career. He has played with such diverse groups as the "Mellomen"
and "Dellonaires" big bands in the 1960's, the soul band
"Princetons", the UMBC Symphony Orchestra as well as other
Baltimore area orchestras in the 1970's and 1980's. He has also been a
frequent trombone and trumpet soloist at various local churches and leads
singing with his guitar as part of his long Christian ministry to youth and
young children.
In
addition to his music and church work, Charlie enjoys model railroading and
crafting Native American flutes.
